According to
recent news from market sources in the LCD display manufacturing industry, the
transition to LED-backlit monitors has been growing at a positively increasing
rate, and the global market is on track to see the technology becoming
mainstream in the consumer sector this year in 2010.
Last week, we wrote that LED-backlit LCD HDTV
shipments were to increase exponentially this year by a margin of about
eight times the current shipment numbers, so it comes as no surprise that the
same will occur in the LCD monitor business for personal computing. As of now, there
is a strong consumer demand for LED-backlighting from LCD HDTVs as well as
notebooks which are both taking up the majority of the current Light Emitting
Diode (LED) manufacturing supply. According to industry sources, the remainder
of LED shipments is just not adequate to fulfill demand for desktop LCD monitor
backlighting as well. In perspective, it will be easier to find a new
notebook with LED backlighting this year
than it will be to find a shiny new widescreen desktop LCD monitor with the
same technology.
Analysts predict the forecast numbers for LED-backlit
notebooks shipments between 60 and 70-percent of all notebooks shipping in 2010,
while LED HDTVs will account for 15 to 20-percent of all LCD HDTVs shipping in
2010. It is important to note that the high cost of LED backlighting is still a
large concern for the majority of manufacturers on all tiers of the playing
ground. The eventual economic balance between supply, demand, overall reduced
technology costs and marginal revenue will ultimately determine the adoption
rates in the personal computing market.
