OpenAI’s chip uses the same technology to enhance Sora’s video-generation capabilities.
Industry insiders report that OpenAI was actively discussing with TSMC the development of a dedicated foundry for its custom chip, but those plans were ultimately canned.
The new plan enhances Sora’s video-generation capabilities, potentially boosting Apple’s device sales as the feature will be integrated into the company’s generative AI suite.
OpenAI and Apple may be collaborating closely on this project, but nothing has been confirmed yet. However, it will take some time before this chip enters mass production, as TSMC’s A16 Angstrom process is not expected to undergo mass manufacturing until 2026.
The A16 offers a speed increment in the 8-10 per cent range at the same operating voltage, plus up to a 20 per cent reduction in power consumption while running at the same speeds. Additionally, this manufacturing process boasts a density increase of 110 per cent, making it ideally suited for servers.
