Micron ships 128GB DDR5 RDIMM memory

Faster than a speeding bullet

Micron Technology has announced it's shipping its whopping 128GB DDR5 RDIMM memory, which can manage 5,600 MT/s if it is going downhill and has the wind behind it.

The tech is juiced up by Micron's 1-beta technology, boasting a bit density that's over 45 per cent more impressive, energy efficiency improved by up to 22 per cent, and latency that's been trimmed by a nifty 16 per cent compared to its silicon-stuffed rivals.

The tech titan's collaboration with the who's who of the industry has seen these beefy modules embraced far and wide across server CPUs that are the backbone of data centres. These modules are not just fast they have been engineered to power through everything from artificial intelligence and machine learning to high-performance computing and in-memory databases.

Micron’s Compute Products Group supremo Praveen Vaidyanathan said that the shipment marks a milestone as Micron leads the pack in high-capacity RDIMMs that have got the nod from all the major CPU platforms.

AMD's Dan McNamara sang praises of the collaboration, saying it's like giving data centres a double shot of espresso. HPE's Krista Satterthwaite chimed in, touting the importance of high-performance and efficient memory for the ever-hungry AI workloads. Intel's Dr. Dimitrios Ziakas, who's thrilled to bits about the DDR5 DIMMs that are set to turbocharge server and AI systems with performance, capacity, and power efficiency.

Supermicro's Wally Liaw threw his hat into the ring, declaring that customers are after a large memory footprint that doesn't skimp on performance or efficiency. It seems everyone wants a slice of this memory pie.

Available now directly from Micron and soon hitting the shelves of select global channel distributors and resellers come June 2024, this memory is part of a smorgasbord of options that Micron is dishing out. From DDR5 RDIMMs to MCRDIMMs and LPDDR5x, there's something for every bandwidth, capacity, and power optimisation need.
