Under headlines about the city’s “slide into chaos”, with the usual racial overtones, the press detailed how on 4 April, Lee, who founded Cash App, was found stabbed and later died in hospital. The implication was that he was a victim of knife crime, although police never mentioned he had been robbed.

However, imagine everyone’s surprise when it turned out that police have arrested another tech executive Lee knew. Coppers have arrested Nima Momeni, 38, who owns a company called Expand IT.

Police have not given a motive for the stabbing, other than saying the pair knew each other, coppers are not saying much. Apparently, they were driving through downtown San Francisco in a car registered to the suspect and there appears to have been a confrontation.

Lee exited the car and Momeni stabbed him multiple times with a knife that was recovered not far from the spot on the 300 block of Main Street to which officers initially responded.

Momeni has been charged with murder.
