McAfee is offering Samsung pile of cash to install its software in its TVs, but the move seems rather odd given that Samsung developed its operating system for the televisions in house.
Samsung is singing that the move will protect users from malware. But Samsung is running Tizen OS on all TVs. So rather than add more third-party junk to the TV surely all it had to do was improve Tizen and not install unneeded software.
In a statement, Samsung said it is the first company to pre-install security on its gear.
McAfee Security for TV scans the apps that run on Samsung smart TVs to identify and remove malware. If you think about it, downloading and installing apps on telly is such a slow task that you are not going to do it often. Certainly not often enough to warrant regular AV scans. The most important apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and Amazon come pre-installed making McAfee’s work rare.
