Commodore PET is back

35 years and I still hate them

After 35 years the first computer, upon which I learnt to program Pascal is back in the shops – as a smart phone.

Unlike many of the press who have covered this story I have no fond memories of the Commodore PET at all. This was partly because our teacher thought it would be a cool idea to connect 14 PETS in a series to one double disk drive and a printer. Most of my computer course was spent reading about Pascal from a book while waiting for the floppy-drive.

As an Android phone it promises to be a little faster and will allow people to play old Commodore 64 and Amiga games using emulators. It runs Android 5.0 has a 5.5 inch screen and a 1.7 GHZ Mediatek 64-bit octa-core. There is a 3000mAh battery, with 16GB or 32GB storage.

It has an Aluminium frame with interchangeable covers in white, 1980s beige and black, with brighter options on the way

It will set you back $365 and is available in France, Germany, Italy and Poland with other countries to follow

Two Italian entrepreneurs, Massimo Canigiani and Carlo Scattolini claim to have acquired rights for the brand in the mobile industry in 38 countries, including the US,

But the main attraction will be its two emulators so gamers will be able to play Amiga and Commodore games such as Lemmings and Ghostbusters.

The Italian team is said to be working with software houses to load some 1980s classic titles onto the handset before it's shipped.

The Commodore PET handset will first launch in France, Germany, Italy and Poland, with plans to roll it out across Europe and the US.  My hatred of Commodore mellowed when the 64 came out, but he site of the Pet still gets me hacked off.
