Netflix site down and unavailable for hours
Video rentals delayed for many
Netflix, the largest online video rental company, suffered a major technical glitch that knocked its Web site out, as well as its logistics and delivery systems, in an outage that began at 7 A.M. PDT on Monday and lasted for about 12 hours.
Netflix has 7.5 million U.S. subscribers to its subscription rental program. The glitch affected Netflix shipments, and the Monday shipments that were scheduled to go out on Monday were delayed until Tuesday. Netflix indicated that no customer information or data had been lost or compromised as a result of the outage.
This is the second extended Web site outage suffered by Netflix within the past year. In July 2007 the site was down for about 18 hours, and the cause of that outage was never disclosed. In July’s outage the logistics and delivery systems were not affected by the blackout.
