Scientists at University of Southampton’s School of Electronics & Computer Science and Imperial College have been awarded more than £1.2 million to develop an "atom chip".
The money comes from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to develop the devices Dr Michael Kraft and Professor Edward Hinds have been building a basic atom chip over the past four years and integrate them on a single chip.
So far they have made a chip, but want to make application-orientated devices.
The chips are particularly useful in sensors and quantum computing.
