Boffins working for Nasa are a little worried that the entire world could lose all its electricity and computers in a huge solar storm which is due. Apparently the sort of storm that is predicted could be so powerful it may wipe out the power grid on the entire planet, according to the Examiner.
Similar storms happened in 1859 and 1921 and wiped out telegraph wires completely. If something similar happened humans would be left without transportation, communication, or power. This could have a profound effect on the world economy and hold us hostage in a power-less electrical gridlock. The current cycle of the sun has been projected by some scientists to be one of the most intense since record keeping began almost 400 years ago.
NASA has talked of the possibility of coming solar storms since 2006, and if correct, say an event like this could threaten to beat out the historic solar maximum of 1958. According to NASA, no one knows when the next super solar storm will erupt. It could be 100 years away or just 100 days. So it might be a good idea to have a battery back up and a few tins of fruit lying around to be ready for the coming doom.
