Many outlets covered the rumor that Apple plans to delay its 5G iPhone because of COVID-19 and Foxconn production capacity issues but as we suspected, the rumors turn out to be premature.

Part One: 5G 

It all comes down to a single very memorable date, February 29, 2000, which was the first time I published an international article at The Register. Twenty years and thousands of stories later, I am ready to share some of my predictions for 2020. Let me start with 5G. 

SVP Raja Koduri confirms

Intel’s chief architect, senior vice president of the newly formed Core and Visual Computing Group, ex. Radeon Technology guru Raja Koduri has confirmed on Twitter that its discrete graphics will come in 2020.

Not an early adopter

Apple is known for not being an early adopter when it comes to new wireless standards. According to people close to the matter, Apple 2019 iPhone won’t have 5G capability. Intel might even be ready with its 5G PC solution.

Gets Audi too

Who would have thought that people who are covering computer graphics would start writing about the automotive industry. Each car of the future is going to get a self-driving ADAS system, powered by a SoC that is wrapped around a strong CPU and GPU. Nvidia announced at CES 2017 that it just scored both Mercedes and Audi automotive deals. 

1223km/h high-speed link between Austria, Slovakia and Hungary

On Tuesday, crowd-sourced transportation company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) signed a deal with the government of Slovakia to explore the idea of building a high-speed, 1,223 kilometer-per hour (760mph) transportation system linking the countries of Austria, Slovakia and Hungary in Central Europe, with the first section of the project to be completed by 2020.

1Gbps and higher peak rates, starting with 3GPP Release 13

Recently, Qualcomm has published a new corporate presentation detailing its path from 3GPP’s “Release 13” (March 2016) and beyond for LTE networks– also more conveniently known as 4.5G LTE “Advanced Pro” – with a development timeframe between 2016 and 2020.

A team of analysts have been looking at numbers and consulted their tarot cards and concluded that AMD will be bankrupt by 2020.
