Snapdragon 7th series integrates 5G
It is all about the 7nm and die-area
Wafers are very expensive, especially for the 7nm leading-edge process, and 10nm is not cheap either. If you need to use a device in a battery-operated environment, then power consumption plays a critical role. But Qualcomm thinks that 5G deployment is happening much faster than was the case with 4G and wants to expand the reach to the Snapdragon 700 and even 600 series.

Qualcomm has decided to announce an updated version of its flagship Snapdragon 855 7nm chip. It is simply called Snapdragon 855 Plus. The CPU is about four percent faster while the GPU gets a saucy 15 percent boost. It is clear that gaming phone manufacturers and VR enthusiast platform builders will be all over it.

Qualcomm and Lenovo showcased the world’s first 5G PC at Computex. The PC is based on Qualcomm’s 8cx platform and comes with additional 5G connectivity. Lenovo calls this design "Project Limitless", based on world’s first 7nm platform purpose-built for PCs.

TSMC has announced that it is doing a test production of 5nm EUV chips, but real production starts in 2020. A long-term investigation leads us to believe that most chips launching in the latter part of this year or early next year will, unlike the UK, remain on 7nm.

Cristiano Amon, President of Qualcomm, just announced that the Snapdragon 8cx Always-Connected PC platform will get a 5G version. The Snapdragon 8cx SoC is matched with the Snapdragon X55 modem to support SA, NSA, and up to 7Gbps downloads speeds.
