Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is officially out

by on27 July 2023

New hinge design, lighter, and with plenty of improvements

Samsung has officially launched its new lineup of foldable phones at its Unpacked event in Seoul, with the Galaxy Z Fold5 leading the pack. The new Fold brought plenty of improvements with Samsung trying to fix all the drawbacks from the predecessor, including the new hinge design, which folds it flat, a better screen, new materials, and Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

The biggest upgrade is the new hinge design, calling it the Flex Hinge. It has a dual rail structure, allowing the phone to stay open at pretty much any angle, and it also allows the phone to close flat. Samsung also made the Fold5 lighter, using the same Armor Aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the external display and the back.

Samsung decided to keep the same screens for the Galaxy Z Fold5, so you get a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with 2316x904 resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The main, or the internal screen is a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with 2176x1812 resolution, the same adaptive refresh rate, and a higher 1,750nits of brightness, making it 30 percent brighter.

The camera system stayed the same, so you get a main 50MP shooter at the back, backed up by a 12MP ultrawide one and a 10MP 3x zoom one. You also get two "selfie" cameras, including 10MP one in the cover screen, and a 4MP under-display camera on the inside.

The battery is a 4,400mAh one with 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, which is not that great but it at least has a slightly better battery life, mostly due to more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

Samsung made a lot of software improvements and has launched a new S Pen Fold Edition, which is slimmer and more compact.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 comes in Icy Blue, Cream, and Phantom Black color options, it is available for pre-order and will start shipping on August 11th. Price is set at €1,899/$1,799 for the base 12GB/256GB version, and goes up to €2,259/$2,159 for the 12GB/1TB version.
