Trials under way
China Mobile, the largest mobile telecom carrier in
China, said that it will establish three experimental TD-LTE (time
division-long term evolution) networks soon.
The trail networks in Qingdao, Xiamen and Zhuhai indicate
the way that the worlds largest developing wireless network is likely
to go. The announcement follows China's Ministry of Industry and
Information Technology (MIIT) decision to work with handset makers to
build
TD-LTE in three phases.
The first-phase trial of technological concepts completed
in June 2009, and the ongoing R&D and its experiments in the second phase
will be finished at the end of June 2010. There is big money in developing handsets and network
gear for China.
The amount that is being invested in R&D is likely to
have a knock on effect on the rest of the world because the kit has to be made
cheaper.
