Asus has been showing off a netbook with a chip that was designed to work in a desktop PC.
The outfit has pimped up its upcoming Asus Eee PC 1215N notebook with an Atom D510 dual core processor. This is a bit like sticking a V6 in a pre 1970 mini. It might mean you have to sit in the back seat but it will go like the clappers. Stopping might be a problem as will going around corners and after a while it might get a little hot.
The Asus Eee PC 1215N also has second generation NVIDIA ION graphics for handling 1080p HD video playback and some 3D graphics performance. The laptop has a 12.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel HD display, HDMI and VGA output, 3 USB 3.0 ports, and a flash card connection. It will also be one of the first to feature NVidia’s Optimus technology.
This allows automatic switching between the NVDIA ION graphics and the integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics. This means that the power sucking chips will only be switched on when you want higher performance graphics.
Some are scratching their heads a bit about the spec. Many think that once Intel announces its Atom 550 chip Asus might use that instead. It is a little more of a saner option. But still it sounds fun if it does not cause your groin to catch on fire.
