Qualcomm and Ericsson to blame

The 5G NR standard defined by 3GPP Rel-15 spec has made a giant leap forward. Qualcomm and Ericsson managed to successfully conduct the first 3GPP compliant 5G NR mmWave over the air call with a Mobile Form Factor Device. Try squeeze all that all in a headline.

Last week Intel decided to talk a bit about its 5G plans, an announcement sparked by Qualcomm’s clear target to have 5G devices shipping in 2019 and the fact that the company showcased a phone factor 5G design.

The spec still has to be locked down 

3GPP, 3rd Generation Partnership Project, has launched the 3GPP official 5G logo and said that it should have the spec sorted out by 2018.

VR, AR, AI mobile speeds of 1.8 Gbps

T-Mobile US is talking a lot about network un-carrier innovations including 4G advanced features such as 4x4 MIMO, QAM 256 and QAM 64 but it looks like the company is working hard on 5G too. T-Mobile has already demonstrated mobile speeds of 1.8 Gbps and fixed speeds of 12 Gbps with latency of 2ns. Things look to be much faster and seamless in 2017 and the years to come, Happy New 2017 Year, that gets us a step closer to that. 

1Gbps and higher peak rates, starting with 3GPP Release 13

Recently, Qualcomm has published a new corporate presentation detailing its path from 3GPP’s “Release 13” (March 2016) and beyond for LTE networks– also more conveniently known as 4.5G LTE “Advanced Pro” – with a development timeframe between 2016 and 2020.
