Price war looms

Asustek Computer has slashed the prices of its mid-range and entry-level motherboards by at least ten per cent and the move appears to have trigged a price war in the China channel market.

MSI has already followed suit, while Gigabyte Technology is still monitoring the war. Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and ASRock are expected to "bear the brunt of the price competition" as sources noted.

According to Digitimes, Asustek has decided to cut its motherboard prices in order to widen its gap with competitors.

More cynical types think that the Asustek's price cuts are aimed at dumping its inventory in China and expect the price war will end shortly.  It is unlikely to result in price cuts in the EU.
