vivo unveils new NEX S and NEX A smartphones

by on13 June 2018

No notch and over 91 percent screen-to-body ratio

Bivo has announced its two newest smartphones, both based on the previously showcased APEX concept and featuring over a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio with the thinnest bezels we have seen so far, the NEX S and the NEX A.

The flagship offering is the vivo NEX S, coming with a bezel-less 6.59-inch Super AMOLED screen with 2316x1080 resolution and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. Unlike most recent smartphones, the NEX S does not feature the infamous notch but rather very thin side and top bezels and a slightly thicker chin at the bottom of the screen. Vivo is calling this screen the Ultra FullView Display, and it certainly looks quite impressive.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and plenty of unique features

The heart of the NEX S is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of internal storage. It also comes with some rather unique features like the pop-up front camera with 8-megapixel sensor, Screen SoundCasting Technology instead of the standard earpiece, and an under-display fingerprint sensor, just like on the vivo X21 UD smartphone.

The main camera is a bit of a let down as this is the same one from the X21 UD, featuring a 12-megapixel f/1.8 sensor and a secondary 5-megapixel f/2.4 one. The rest of the specifications include a 4,000mAh battery which should provide a decent battery life, Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 and plenty of AI enhancements, and more.

vivo NEX A comes with Snapdragon 710 and the same screen

In addition to the NEX S, vivo also unveiled a mainstream-oriented NEX A, which has the same 6.59-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen, with the same 91.24 percent screen-to-body ratio and weird 19.3:9 aspect ratio, same 4,000mAh battery, and the same dual rear camera setup with 12-/5-megapixel sensors and pop-up 8-megapixel front camera.

On the other hand, the NEX A does not come with an under-display fingerprint reader, which is replaced by a standard one on the back, and comes with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 710 SoC, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The vivo also runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Funtouch OS 4.0 on top of it, same AI enhancements, including AI HRD, AI Filters, AI Photo Composition, and more.

Both the vivo NEX S and the NEX A features dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, USB Type-C, and 3.5mm audio jack.
