Uber loses key European battle

by on20 December 2017

It can be regulated

The US app-based taxi company Uber has lost a crucial court battle in Europe which could see it being regulated in all member states.

Uber has always argued that it did not need to face the same regulations as taxi companies. This gave it a considerable advantage over traditional taxi companies which had to meet all sorts of expensive standards.

Now the European Court of Justice has ruled that the service provided by Uber connecting individuals with non-professional drivers is the same as any services in the field of transport.

This means that member states can, therefore, regulate the conditions for providing that service.

The case follows a complaint from a professional taxi drivers’ association in Barcelona that Uber’s activities in Spain amounted to misleading practices and unfair competition from Uber’s use of non-professional drivers - a service Uber calls UberPOP.
