Patent troll claims it invented the Mobile App market

Goes after developers who write them

A patent troll claims it invented the idea of the mobile app and is threatening every developer that ever wrote one with an East Texas lawsuit.

Austin Meyer is the developer behind X-Plane  . A few years ago, he uploaded the app to the Google Play Store and was it with a lawsuit from Uniloc. Uniloc claims it patented the idea behind the app market and it wants a share of the profits. It has already targeted a bunch of other popular apps, including Minecraft.

Meyer did some digging and found out that East Texas was selected by patent trolls because the Judge who sat in on the cases, Leonard Davis might have a direct relationship with the troll’s prosecuting lawyer in many of these cases.

Davis who is apparently known for almost never throwing out patent lawsuits gets to see his son Bo Davis, who is the lawyer representing many of these patent trolls. So no conflict of interest there at all. Besides it being East Texas, everyone is closely related to everyone else.

To be fair to the Judge, he might not be involved in the current case. Last year Davis announced last year he’s leaving the bench to join a private law firm focused on patent litigation. It will be interesting to see who replaces him and if the court’s reputation as a patent troll paradise will go.
