MediaTek scores HTC Desire A55 design win

by on02 February 2015

5.5-inch phone with a nice spec

All eyes are on HTC's event scheduled for March 1, just a day before the kick of Mobile World Congeries 2015.

We all expect to see the HTC One M9, the next generation flagship and successor of the HTC One M8 metal body phone, and we all expect to see a Snapdragon 810 inside, as well as a higher resolution camera.

The other phone that surprised many is the 5.5-inch QHD phone codenamed A55, powered by a MediaTek MT6795 octa-core 64-bit SoC with 3GB of RAM. The spec includes 32GB of storage, 20-megapixel rear camera, 13-megapixel or 4--megapixel UltraPixel front camera. If the screen is indeed a QHD unit, this is 2560x1440 pixels, so this phone will fight heavyweights like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The same source expects BoomSound speakers, Bluetooth 5.1 and a sub-3000mAh battery. The phone launches with Sense 7.0 and Android 5.0 that debuted on the European HTC One M8 last week.

HTC A55 (we assume this is the codename will come with another official name) should come in white Rose Gold, Gray, and Brown Gold colors. There will be two version - one with single SIM for EMEA, and one with a dual SIM slot for the Asian market.

It looks like MediaTek is getting some high-profile design wins, just as we predicted last year. The company is doing rather well and will definitely benefit from the fact that Intel didn’t manage to get traction on mobile phone front, that Qualcomm slipped with the Snapdragon 810 and that Nvidia decided to leave the phone market.
