AU Optronics flogs family silver

Earns $25.6 million

TFT-LCD panel maker AU Optronics has been flogging off a factory housing a 3.5G production line, to Wistron.

The deal netted AUO $25.6 million and gave Wistron a 70,415 square meter factory which it has bee using since December 1999. Unfortunately 3.5G technology has gone the way of the dodo and the L3A line, which now plays only a minor role in the company's production.

AUO has three 3.5G production lines all with very catchy titles. L3B is converted for experimental production and L3C and L3D still in operation.

AUO wants to expand an 8.5G production line in central Taiwan and setting up a 6G LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) production line in Kunshan, eastern China.

The 6G LTPS production line will start production in the second half of 2016, with panels to be mainly shipped to China-based vendors of mid-range and high-end smartphones.

Wistron has not said what it wants to do with the plant.
