AMD dances on Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970 grave

Drops prices of rival chip

It seems that AMD is having a laugh at Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 970 graphics chip woes.

For those who came in late, Nvidia is having a few issues with their GeForce GTX 970 graphics card after the discovery of the memory allocation issue and slow performance in the graphics card's last 0.5 GB of VRAM, some users are requesting and successfully getting refunds for their $330 product.

This is despite the card still being good gaming performance for the price – now AMD is making sure that is less of the case.

AMD has lowered the price of the card's main competitor, the Radeon R9 290X. Previously retailing for around $330-350, the R9 290X can now be purchased for $299, with a mail-in rebate cutting that by a further $20 to $279.

This makes the R9 290X is now $30-50 cheaper than the GTX 970. Given the performance between the two is similar, and GTX 970 credibility is right up there with Mick Romney, it looks like AMD is kicking Nvidia when it is down.

Adjusting the price to the R9 290X's price is no skin off the nose of AMD and has not required a knock on reduction in other products in AMD's line-up. The R9 290 is still available for $270, the R9 280X for $240, and the R9 285 for $210.
