MSI talks of 10 gaming notebooks

GS63VR Stealth Pro is lighter than Razer Blade at 3.96lbs

Following Nvidia’s launch of Geforce 10-series GPUs for gaming notebooks and facing competition from other manufacturers, MSI has just announced ten new 14-inch to 18-inch gaming notebooks featured under four product lineups – GT, GS, GE and GP. This is getting confusing, so bear with us.

The GT83VR Titan SLI is the company’s new flagship model featuring Geforce GTX 1080 SLI or Geforce GTX 1070 SLI. Following this is the GT73VR Titan SLI featuring Geforce GTX 1070 SLI, a single GTX 1080 or a single GTX 1070. Next up is the non-SLI enthusiast lineup, the GT72VR and GT62VR Dominator, featuring single Geforce GTX 1070 and GTX 1060 configurations. Last up is the pro gaming lineup including the GS73VR Stealth, GS63VR Stealth, GT72VR Tobii, GE72VR Apache Pro, GE62VR Apache Pro and GS43VR Phantom Pro, all of which feature a single Geforce GTX 1060.

The company claims its new gaming notebooks will come pre-installed with the company’s latest Dragon Center monitoring software. This interestingly includes a new feature called “1-Click VR” which allows a user to optimize PC settings for head-mounted devices with just a single click. MSI’s also includes its latest SSD RAID configuration, and says all models will support an Ultra HD (3840x2160p) display resolution configuration. Last but not least, the company has also developed two new heatsink-fan units called Cooler Boost Titan and Trinity that use redesigned fans units and produce over 30 percent more airflow than its previous notebook fan design.

Size and weight

The nice part about some of these notebooks is that they offer a variety of form factors ranging from thin and light to more traditional dictionary-sized gaming notebooks. In particular, the GS63VR Stealth Pro is a great choice because it offers 3840x2160p resolution in a 15.6-inch package at just 3.96lbs (1.80kg), complete with a Geforce GTX 1060. MSI is claiming it is the "world's thinnest 15.6-inch gaming notebook." This is in comparison to the current Razer Blade with Geforce GTX 970M that weighs in at 4.25lbs (1.93kg), while the refreshed Razer Blade with Geforce GTX 1060 will probably not weigh any much differently.

On the other hand, there are models like the GT83VR Titan SLI that weigh in at 10.36lbs (4.7kg), but this is understandable given the 18.4-inch display and 8-cell battery unit.

3DMark 11 scores just a few hundred points shy of desktop counterparts

MSI has a few graphs comparing 3DMark 11 scores between an overclocked Intel Skylake desktop PC and three of its new gaming notebooks featuring Geforce GTX 1060, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 GPUs. The desktop runs a Core i7 6700K at 4.5GHz while its notebooks are running a Core i7 68820HK with Turbo Mode enabled. For the GTX 1060 comparison, the desktop wins by just 100 points, while for the GTX 1070 the desktop wins by 300 points and for the GTX 1080 the desktop wins by 1000 points.

In contrast, however, the GTX 1060 notebook outperforms a Geforce GTX 970M notebook with Core i7 6700HQ processor by 4,900 points, while a GTX 1070 notebook outperforms a similar Geforce GTX 980M notebook by 9,700 points, and a Geforce GTX 1080 notebook outperforms a similar Geforce GTX 980M notebook by 12,500 points.

Pricing and availability

For MSI’s new gaming notebook lineup, we are looking at a price range anywhere up to $4,999 for the GT83VR Titan SLI with Core i7 6920HQ processor and dual GTX 1080s, and as low as $1,499 for the GS43VR Phantom Pro with Core i7 6700HQ processor and single GTX 1060. Some notebooks are currently in stock at a wide range of retailers, while others are still available for pre-order, but it ultimately depends on the model and configuration as there are many to choose from.
