Google has quietly introduced a new service that could take on GitHub as a massive online repository of code.

The name of the service is Cloud Source Repositories and Google started offering beta access to it a few months ago. It’s not just a competitor to GitHub, it can also be used as a remote for existing Git repositories on the net.

It’s also worth noting that Google decided to pull the plug on Google Code earlier this year. The search giant cited the popularity of GitHub and Bitbucket as the main reason behind the shutdown.

VentureBeat got in touch with Google to find out what it plans to do with Cloud Source Repositories, and the answer was quite simple – the service is all about enabling the creation of private and very secure Git repositories that will work with existing tools, while at the same time being hosted on Google’s secure cloud servers.

Google product manager Chris Sells told VentureBeat that the new services will also be backed by an API, which will be released later this year, enabling automated control of repositories.

“We’re in beta right now, but expect Google Cloud Source Repositories to get even better as we move towards the full release,” said Sells.
