Xiaomi accessory push is getting out of control

Chinese giant has a lot of fans, literally

When Xiaomi announced plans to launch accessories shops in western markets, we assumed the Chinese giant would focus on smartphone kit. However, since then, the company has gone into overdrive to launch loads of cool looking and quite odd hardware.

We heard good things about Xiaomi accessories, so we decided to try out one of its Bluetooth speakers earlier this year – and it lived up to our expectations.  The company has a few more models, and the latest one is a stereo 2x1.8W unit with an aluminium chassis and milled ABS grille, which ships for $25.

Xiaomi also markets loads of earphones and even low-impendence headphones for about $100.

Office and PC stuff

However, Xiaomi is clearly trying to expand well beyond mobile gadgets and accessories. PC and Mac geeks may be interested in one of the latest Mi-brad products – an aluminium mousepad. It has an anodized finish and a rubberized back. Available in two different sizes, the stylish pad ships for $21.

Xiaomi recently launched a power strip with three 2A USB charging ports, along with a smart remote-controlled plug.

Xiaomi fans buy Xiaomi fans

Xiaomi recently introduced a range of cheap USB lights, usually marketed with its powerbanks. Now it has introduced a flexible, silicon fan. This weird device sells for less than $5. With the introduction of its smart TV, Xiaomi also launched some Bluetooth 3D glasses. Priced at $9, the active glasses are marketed as one of the lightest solutions on the market, weighing in at 30g.

Speaking of weight, a couple of months ago the company launched a smart digital scale, although many geeks should probably stay away from it unless they want to feel depressed every time they weigh in.

Xiaomi’s approach is unconventional. We were hoping to see more headphones, powerbanks and stylish smartphone accessories, but the company appears to be expanding its focus on home automation, office kit and inexpensive toys like fans and USB lights. The change of direction probably has something to do with the company’s plans to enter western markets – mobile accessories just aren’t enough, so we expect Xiaomi to roll out even more home automation products, along with accessories for PC users and home entertainment devices.

With its sleek design and premium build quality, Xiaomi may be on to something.
