Mediatek-based Android One smartphone leaked

by on15 September 2014

India’s Spice Dream UNO

The Spice Dream UNO appears to be the world’s first Android One phone and thanks to a Flipkart leak we can now take a closer look at the Android One platform.

Android One is Google’s name for a frugal smartphone platform designed for emerging markets. India is the prime target and local phone brands like Micromax, Karbonn and Spice are expected to launch the first batch of Android One phones. The phones will be based on Mediatek silicon

Pricing is what sets them apart from most smartphones. Android One devices should cost about $100, putting them in Moto E territory.

The Spice Dream UNO sports a 4.5-inch FWVGA display (854x480) and the price is INR 6,999, roughly $115. The rest of the package includes a 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek SoC, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage backed by a microSD slot and a 1700mAh battery. The main camera is a 5-megapixel affair, while the front facing camera depends on a 2-megapixel sensor.

The phone will ship with Android 4.4.4 and dual-SIM support. It measures 132x67x9mm and the bezels look a bit thick, but we have to bear in mind that we are talking about a very cheap smartphone. Android One is supposed to go after feature phones and Nokia’s Asha phones, the platform is not intended to compete with big brand mainstream smartphones, although the Moto E is awfully close in most respects.
