Tomb Raider reboot was profitable

Upcoming Definitive Edition could do well

Square Enix has confirmed that the Tomb Raider reboot has reached profitability. The rebooted Tomb Raider apparently crossed into the profitability threshold late last year, according to executive producer Scot Amos in comments to Eurogamer.

The rebooted edition of Laura Croft sold a confirmed 3.4 million copies during the first month of release, but at the time the news was sort of bad when Square Enix was predicting sales of 5 million to 6 million units. While we don’t know the exact numbers, what we do know is that the game has reached profitability while only being released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC so far.

Now, Square Enix is looking to extend the life of the game with the new Definitive Edition that is being released on January 28th in North America and January 31st in Europe for the both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Definitive Edition is being released at a time when little new content is coming out for both consoles, and the graphically enhanced version of the game that includes all of the already released DLC could do very well for Square Enix. One potential bump in the road with some is that it has been revealed that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version of the game will only run 30fps, but will be rendered at 1080p on both systems.

Square Enix apparently never lost faith in the Tomb Raider reboot and it is so pleased with the results that it is anxious to get started with Crystal Dynamics on the sequel. If sales are as good for the Definitive Edition as expected, it could be one of the surprise reboots hits to do very well in a long time.
