Rumour: HTC working on 5-inch 1080p phone

by on06 August 2012

Possible, but not very likely

The rumour mill is in high gear and once again we are hearing talk of a 1080p phone, which can only mean one thing – it’s time for skepticism and sarcasm.

Digitimes is reporting that HTC will enter the phablet space with a 5-inch device with a 1794x1080 phone in September or October. Yes, we are aware that this isn’t proper 1080p, but that is beside the point.

The site cites industry sources and points to Samsung’s success in the 5-inch segment and its plans to release the Galaxy Note 2 later this month. So it sounds plausible that HTC should follow up with its HD phone a couple of months.

However, we would not bet on it. Slapping an 1080p screen on a phone is not as easy as it sounds, although it is possible. Basically 1794x1080 translates into about 1.9 megapixels, while current generation high-end Androids feature 720p or 1280x800 screens, with fewer than 1 million pixels. So, an 1080p screen would require quite a bit more processing power and more juice. Let’s not forget that there aren’t that many apps that would benefit from the extra resolution, either.

At 5 inches the ppi count would be around 410, somewhat lower than LG’s 5-inch full 1080p screen demoed a couple of months ago.

We would like it to be true, but we just don’t think it is.
