Surprise move by not going with Activision

In a surprise announcement, id Software announced that their upcoming new game called Rage, which features the new id Tech5 engine, will be published and distributed by Electronic Arts, rather than previous publisher Activision.

Id Software had been publishing their games with Activision for a long time and the switch to EA comes as quite a surprise. Software guru John Carmack says that he is excited about the new relationship that they have with EA. Getting the distribution rights for Rage is quite a feather in the cap of the execs at EA.

Impressions of the Mad Max-like driving game that is set in what can only be described as a post-apocalyptic world seem to be very positive. It is quite a departure for id Software from the typically dark first person shooters that the company has been known for over the years. Rage is very open and bright, but at the same time there are some pretty interesting looking characters in the game. The game is also set to be the first id game not rated “M” for Mature.

Rage is set to be released on a wide variety of platforms, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Mac. id will be showing off more of Rage during their annual Quakecon event from July 31st to August 2nd in Dallas, Texas. No additional release information was announced beyond the fact that it will ship when it is finished.
